I’m heading to North Carolina today to spend Easter with our family, but I wanted to share the quick and easy hostess gifts I made for my cousin, aunt and mother. I wanted to bring just “a little something” but not the typical potted plant (sorry Easter lilies!) or bottle of wine. I know you’ve probably seen those orange chocolate covered strawberries that are meant to look like carrots. Well I thought I’d try my hand at making those, and put a few together in these adorable mini pails I found at Target for $1 each!
I want to start with a warning – your strawberries will NOT look as good as the Harry and David ones unless you are a candy pro. So just know that while they aren’t perfect (mine aren’t!) they are tasty and certainly much more affordable ($30 for 6 strawberries!!!!!).
Start out by washing your strawberries and letting them dry completely.
Once dry, start melting your chocolate (you can also use candy melts, which I found was easier to work with for the food coloring). Have a tray ready with parchment or wax paper for the strawberries to set.
Once the chocolate or candy coating is melted, add your food coloring. I couldn’t find orange at the store, so I used red and yellow (remember your primary color wheel from grade school? Comes in handy!). I saw other sites that had a recommended formula of red to yellow, but I just added a little of each (1-2 drops at a time) until I got a color I wanted. I was satisfied with more of a pastel color, but you can play around with it to get a deep orange.
While holding the strawberries gently by the stem, dip in the chocolate and place on the tray to set. Once the coating is set, I took a toothpick and added some more chocolate to the strawberries to make the lines so it looks like a carrot.
While the strawberries were setting, I prepped my pails by added a bit of pastel Easter grass (even though I admitted last week that I hated it!).
I individually wrapped each strawberry in a plastic treat bag, then each pail held three berries comfortably. I finished it off with a lavender ribbon I had picked out to complement the pale orange pails. I opted not to make a gift tag, but you definitely could.
Voila! Easy hostess gift! Happy Easter!
