DIY decor and details at fall festival

My colleague, Brie, planned this fabulous fall festival at the Brixton Restaurant in Washington, DC. The weather was perfect, so the group was able to take advantage of the rooftop. Brie did all of the decor herself (can we say glitter pumpkins!) and with some crafty volunteers, and designed a fun menu, including a DIY trail mix bar, a chili bar, and signature drinks.

How were you inspired for this event?

Fall is my favorite season, so as soon as this event idea came to fruition, I had a lot of inspiration to draw from. Since my client was envisioning an outdoorsy feel for this event, I instantly knew I wanted to go with a rustic feel. Of course, I immediately took to Pinterest and found another inspiration to the event: golden yellow and white chevron stripes. I was able to use that theme for my welcome table and carry that same style to the paper straws guests used for the specialty drinks. From there, I was able to incorporate the rustic aspects with the burlap table runners and center pieces, as well as add the colors of orange and brown with the pumpkins, leaves, and hay bales.

What is your favorite detail?

My favorite detail for the Alumni Fall Fest were the painted pumpkins, which were placed throughout the venue. While I didn’t paint all of these pumpkins, my colleagues had the opportunity to help with the details for this event by painting the approximately 25 pumpkins that were present. To help guide the theme, I provided them pictures of various painted pumpkins, such as chevron-striped, polka dotted, and glittered pumpkins. Not only did this perfectly add to the fall theme, but it also added a lot of personal touch to the event. Bringing the staff together to decorate pumpkins increased the excitement for the event and throughout the event, the guests, including the kids, pointed them out.

Any advice for planning something similar?

Consider the elements. While the weather was absolutely perfect for this rooftop reception, the wind was definitely a limiting factor that I didn’t take into consideration. It wasn’t a particularly windy day, but the fact it was on a rooftop, made it a bit more gusty. Many of my decorations had to be altered, such as my glass vases with flowers, signs, and hanging leaves, due to the wind. All the décor worked out fine in the end, but I wish I would’ve planned for that ahead of time.
